Amazon Pours $13B into Australian AI Infrastructure

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled plans for a massive AU$20 billion ($13 billion) investment to expand, operate, and maintain its data center infrastructure in Australia over the next five years. Announced on June 14, 2025, this represents the largest technology investment ever made in Australia by a global provider.

The investment will primarily focus on expanding AWS's existing data center facilities in Sydney and Melbourne, with funding directed toward new server capacity and support for generative AI workloads. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who met with AWS CEO Matt Garman in Seattle ahead of the G-7 summit, welcomed the announcement, calling it "a huge vote of confidence in the Australian economy."

"This is exactly the kind of economic investment in our nation that we want to see, and creates opportunities for continued innovation and growth," Albanese stated. "The investment will generate economic opportunity for Australians, including skilled jobs and infrastructure that can support complex AI and supercomputing applications."

According to the Australian Government's Department of Industry, Science and Resources, AI and automation are expected to contribute up to AU$600 billion annually to Australia's economy by 2030. This investment aligns with the government's vision to improve productivity and economic growth through AI innovation.

As part of the expansion, Amazon will also invest in three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland, committing to purchase a combined capacity of more than 170 megawatts across the three facilities. This renewable energy initiative supports Amazon's commitment to power its operations with 100% renewable energy.

The investment comes amid a global push by major tech companies to build infrastructure supporting the rapidly growing demand for generative AI and cloud computing. Amazon has recently announced similar investments in other regions, including $20 billion in Pennsylvania and $10 billion in North Carolina, as part of its broader strategy to expand AI capabilities worldwide.
