Google Transforms Starline into Beam: 3D Video Calls Get Real

Google has officially rebranded Project Starline as Google Beam, an AI-powered 3D video communication platform that creates lifelike conversations without requiring special glasses or headsets. The company is partnering with HP to launch the first Google Beam devices for select enterprise customers later this year, with initial showcases planned for InfoComm in June. Google Beam will integrate with services like Zoom and Google Meet, which is also gaining AI-powered real-time speech translation capabilities.
Google Transforms Starline into Beam: 3D Video Calls Get Real

Google's experimental Project Starline, which has been in development for several years, is evolving into a commercial product called Google Beam. Announced at Google I/O 2025, this AI-first 3D video communication platform aims to revolutionize remote collaboration by making virtual conversations feel remarkably natural and immersive.

Google Beam uses a sophisticated combination of AI, 3D imaging, and light field display technology to transform standard 2D video streams into realistic 3D experiences. The system's state-of-the-art AI volumetric video model enables users to make eye contact, read subtle facial cues, and perceive body language as if they were physically present in the same room. All of this happens without requiring users to wear specialized headsets or glasses.

"The combination of our AI video model and our light field display creates a profound sense of dimensionality and depth," Google explained in its announcement. "This is what allows you to make eye contact, read subtle cues and build understanding and trust as if you were face-to-face."

To bring Google Beam to market, the company has partnered with HP, which will manufacture the first Beam devices. These will be showcased at InfoComm 2025 in Orlando, Florida (June 7-13) and made available to select enterprise customers later this year. Google is also collaborating with Zoom for software integration and channel partners like Diversified and AVI-SPL for global distribution.

Several major organizations have already expressed interest in adopting the technology, including Deloitte, Salesforce, Citadel, NEC, Hackensack Meridian Health, Duolingo, and Recruit. Angel Ayala, Managing Director at Deloitte Consulting LLP, described Beam as "not just a technological breakthrough but a reimagining of how we connect."

Alongside Beam, Google announced a complementary feature for Google Meet: AI-powered speech translation. This capability allows participants to converse naturally across language barriers, with the system translating spoken words in near real-time while preserving the speaker's voice, tone, and expressiveness. Initially available in English and Spanish for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, with more languages coming soon, this technology further enhances Google's vision for seamless global communication.
