Google has officially launched AI Mode in Search for all users across the United States, marking a significant evolution in how people interact with the world's most popular search engine.
First introduced as an experimental feature in Google Search Labs in March 2025, AI Mode is now being made widely available following its showcase at Google I/O 2025. The rollout began on May 20, with Google promising complete availability to all US users in the coming days.
AI Mode represents a fundamental reimagining of Search, powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5, Google's most intelligent AI model to date. Unlike traditional search, which returns a list of links, AI Mode provides comprehensive, conversational responses to complex queries while still offering relevant web links.
"What we're seeing in testing is people are asking questions that are about twice the query length of traditional search, and they're also following up and asking follow-up questions about a quarter of the time," explained Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, in a March interview with TechCrunch.
The technology behind AI Mode employs a "query fan-out" technique that breaks down questions into subtopics and issues multiple queries simultaneously. This approach enables Search to dive deeper into the web than traditional searches, helping users discover more relevant content without performing multiple searches manually.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai noted at I/O that AI Mode leads to searches two to three times the length of traditional Google Searches, and sometimes even five times that length. The feature also allows for natural follow-up questions, creating a more conversational search experience.
In addition to the core AI Mode experience, Google announced several advanced capabilities coming to Labs users in the coming weeks and months, including Deep Search for thorough research, Search Live for camera-based interactions, and new shopping features. These frontier capabilities will eventually graduate to the core Search experience based on user feedback.
For users who want immediate access, Google has made AI Mode available through the Labs program, accessible via a tab below the search bar or directly at google.com/aimode.
