Google Brings Gemini 2.5 to Search with Enhanced AI Mode

Google is expanding its AI capabilities in Search with a nationwide rollout of AI Mode powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5, the company's most advanced AI model yet.

Announced at Google I/O 2025, the expansion marks a significant milestone for the company's search technology. AI Mode, which was previously available only to select users through Google Labs, is now being deployed to all US users, with plans for further global expansion.

At the core of this update is Deep Search, a powerful feature that leverages an enhanced query fan-out technique. This technology can issue hundreds of searches simultaneously, reason across disparate pieces of information, and generate fully-cited expert-level reports in minutes. According to Google, this capability could potentially save users hours of research time when exploring complex topics.

"Deep Search uses the same query fan-out technique but taken to the next level," explained Liz Reid, Google's head of search. "It can issue hundreds of searches, reason across disparate pieces of information, and create an expert-level fully-cited report in just minutes."

The company reports that AI Overviews, which preceded AI Mode, has been one of the most successful launches in Search in the past decade. In major markets like the US and India, AI Overviews has driven over 10% increase in usage for queries that display AI-generated results. User engagement continues to grow over time as people adapt to this new search paradigm.

Google is also introducing agentic capabilities from Project Mariner into AI Mode. These features will help users complete tasks like purchasing event tickets, making restaurant reservations, and booking local appointments. The company is working with partners including Ticketmaster, StubHub, Resy, and Vagaro to create seamless experiences.

Additional upcoming features include complex analysis capabilities that can create charts and visualizations on-the-fly using real-time data, and Search Live, which will allow users to have back-and-forth conversations with Search about what they see in real-time using their camera.

"AI Mode is where we'll first bring Gemini's frontier capabilities, and it's also a glimpse of what's to come," Google stated. "As we get feedback, we'll graduate many features and capabilities from AI Mode right into the core Search experience."
