Google is aggressively expanding its Gemini AI assistant across the Android ecosystem, with major announcements made during the Android Show on May 13, 2025.
The company revealed that Gemini will be coming to Wear OS smartwatches in the coming months, offering users access to AI capabilities directly from their wrist. According to Guemmy Kim, senior director of product and user experience on the Android team, this integration will be particularly useful in situations where using a phone is impractical, such as during cooking or cycling. Smartwatch users will be able to interact with Gemini through natural language, setting reminders, sending messages, and accessing information from connected apps without precise phrasing.
Google TV is also getting the Gemini treatment later this year. The AI assistant will provide personalized content recommendations, answer questions, and help users find educational content. For example, families can ask for age-appropriate action movies or have children ask questions about topics like the solar system, with Gemini pulling up relevant YouTube videos to enhance learning.
Perhaps most significantly, Google announced that Gemini is coming to Android Auto in the next few months. Patrick Brady, VP of Android for Cars, described this as "one of the largest transformations in the in-vehicle experience that we've seen in a very, very long time." The integration will enable drivers to use Gemini as a powerful voice assistant for sending texts and playing music, but also for more complex tasks like finding restaurants with specific dietary options along a planned route. A feature called "Gemini Live" will allow ongoing conversations about various topics while driving.
These updates represent Google's continued push to integrate AI capabilities throughout its product ecosystem, replacing Google Assistant with the more advanced Gemini AI. The company confirmed that Gemini will be available in over 40 languages and will roll out to all countries that currently have access to Google's generative AI models.
The Android AI updates announced today will be followed by Google's I/O developer conference on May 20-21, where the company is expected to reveal more details about Android 16 and further AI integrations across its product lineup.
