Microsoft Unleashes AI Agent Teams in Copilot Studio

At Microsoft Build 2025, the company unveiled Microsoft 365 Copilot Tuning, a groundbreaking low-code capability that allows organizations to customize AI models using their own data without requiring data science expertise. Microsoft also introduced multi-agent orchestration, enabling multiple AI agents to collaborate on complex tasks with human oversight. These innovations mark a significant advancement in Microsoft's vision for human-agent collaboration, with the company projecting businesses will deploy 1.3 billion AI agents by 2028.

Microsoft has officially entered what it calls "the era of AI agents" with major announcements at its Build 2025 developer conference that transform how organizations can deploy and orchestrate AI assistants.

The centerpiece of Microsoft's announcement is Microsoft 365 Copilot Tuning, a new low-code capability in Copilot Studio that allows organizations to tune AI models using their company data, workflows, and processes—all without requiring data science teams or extensive development time. Available starting in June through an Early Adopter Program, this feature enables businesses to create highly specialized agents that reflect their unique expertise and voice.

"For example, a legal firm can create an agent to reflect its unique voice and expertise—automating document creation and even drafting arguments that blend institutional knowledge with client-specific context," explained Microsoft in its announcement.

Perhaps more revolutionary is the introduction of multi-agent orchestration in Copilot Studio, which enables multiple AI agents to exchange data, collaborate on tasks, and divide work based on each agent's expertise. This capability, now in public preview, allows organizations to build systems where agents delegate tasks to one another rather than relying on a single agent to handle everything or managing disconnected agents in silos.

The practical applications are significant—for example, multiple agents can collaborate across HR, IT, and marketing departments to streamline employee onboarding, with each agent handling its specialized domain while presenting a unified response to users.

Microsoft's AI agent ecosystem is already showing impressive adoption. More than 230,000 organizations—including 90% of Fortune 500 companies—currently use Copilot Studio to create and customize agents. Last quarter alone, customers created over 1 million custom agents across SharePoint and Copilot Studio, representing 130% growth quarter-over-quarter.

These developments build on Microsoft's broader AI momentum, with 15 million developers now using GitHub Copilot and hundreds of thousands of customers leveraging Microsoft 365 Copilot for research, brainstorming, and solution development. According to IDC projections cited by Microsoft, businesses will deploy approximately 1.3 billion AI agents by 2028, highlighting the transformative potential of this technology.
