In a major advancement for America's artificial intelligence capabilities, OpenAI and Oracle have announced a significant expansion of their Stargate project, adding 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of AI data center capacity across the United States.
The expansion builds upon the companies' ambitious $500 billion initiative announced in January 2025 to develop 10GW of AI infrastructure nationwide over the next four years. With this addition, the total Stargate capacity under development now exceeds 5GW, capable of supporting more than 2 million high-performance chips essential for advanced AI workloads.
"This significantly advances our progress toward the commitment we announced at the White House in January," OpenAI stated in a recent blog post. "We now expect to exceed our initial commitment thanks to strong momentum with partners including Oracle and SoftBank."
The economic impact of this expansion will be substantial, creating over 100,000 jobs across construction, operations, and indirect roles such as manufacturing and local services. These positions include specialized roles for electricians, equipment operators, and technicians from more than 20 states.
Meanwhile, construction of Stargate I in Abilene, Texas is progressing steadily, with parts of the facility already operational. Oracle began delivering the first Nvidia GB200 racks in June, and OpenAI has started running early training and inference workloads to advance its next-generation frontier research. According to industry reports, the Abilene facility alone will eventually house approximately 64,000 Nvidia GB200 GPUs by the end of 2026.
The Stargate project represents a cornerstone of America's strategy to maintain global leadership in artificial intelligence. OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane emphasized the project's significance: "This investment will create new jobs, accelerate America's reindustrialization, and help advance U.S. AI leadership." The initiative also complements OpenAI's recently launched "OpenAI for Countries" program, which aims to help other nations build local AI infrastructure while supporting democratic AI principles.
