In a groundbreaking achievement for autonomous vehicle technology, Tesla has successfully completed the first fully autonomous delivery of a Model Y from its Gigafactory to a customer's home in Austin, Texas.
On June 27, 2025, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on social media that the vehicle had completed its journey a day ahead of the scheduled June 28 delivery date. "The first fully autonomous delivery of a Tesla Model Y from factory to a customer home across town, including highways, was just completed a day ahead of schedule!!" Musk wrote, congratulating Tesla's AI teams for both software development and AI chip design.
What makes this achievement particularly remarkable is that the vehicle operated without any human presence inside or remote operators controlling it at any point during the journey. The Model Y maintained highway speeds of up to 72 mph while navigating a route that took approximately 30 minutes to complete.
According to Ashok Elluswamy, head of Tesla's AI team, the self-delivering Model Y used an advanced version of Tesla's Unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The vehicle safely navigated public roads and highways, demonstrating the system's capability to handle high-speed autonomous navigation.
This milestone comes just days after Tesla launched its Robotaxi service in Austin on June 22, where a small fleet of autonomous vehicles began offering rides to select passengers. Unlike the Robotaxi service, which currently includes safety monitors in the front passenger seat, the autonomous delivery had no human oversight whatsoever.
The achievement positions Tesla ahead of competitors like Waymo in the autonomous vehicle space. While Waymo has been operating commercial robotaxi services in several cities including Austin, Tesla's demonstration of a completely unmanned vehicle delivery represents a significant step toward reshaping how manufacturers handle vehicle deliveries and potentially transforming the future of transportation.
