Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI appears to be making a significant move into productivity software with its Grok AI assistant, according to code leaked by reverse engineer Nima Owji on June 22, 2025.
The leaked information reveals that xAI is developing an advanced file editor for Grok with robust spreadsheet support. This new capability would enable users to communicate with Grok while actively editing files, creating a seamless experience where the AI can provide real-time assistance with tasks like fixing formulas or summarizing data.
"You can talk to Grok and ask it to assist you at the same time you're editing the files!" Owji wrote in his social media post, which included a visual representation of the purported interface.
While xAI has not officially confirmed the leak or detailed its strategy for interactive, multimodal AI workspaces, this development follows a series of related announcements. In April 2025, the company launched Grok Studio, a split-screen workspace that enables users to collaborate with Grok on generating documents, code, reports, and browser games. It also introduced Workspaces functionality for organizing files and conversations in one place.
The advanced file editor appears to be a natural extension of these capabilities, potentially positioning Grok as a serious competitor to established productivity tools. Google's Gemini Workspace for Sheets, Docs, and Gmail offers similar functionality but operates exclusively within Google's ecosystem. If xAI's editor supports multiple file types across platforms, it could provide a more flexible alternative.
This development aligns with Musk's stated ambition to transform X into an "everything app" encompassing document management, chat capabilities, payment processing, and social media integration. If successfully implemented, Grok could evolve from being primarily a ChatGPT alternative to becoming an essential workplace productivity tool that helps users write, edit, analyze, and share content within a unified environment.
