The new feature, expected to debut with iOS 19 (potentially renamed iOS 26) at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9, will leverage machine learning to analyze how users interact with their devices. By monitoring usage patterns—such as which apps are frequently used, when devices are typically charged, and which features consume the most power—the system will dynamically adjust background processes to reduce unnecessary energy drain.
According to multiple sources familiar with Apple's plans, the technology will be part of the Apple Intelligence platform and will utilize anonymized battery data collected from users over time to identify trends and make predictions about when to reduce power draw for specific applications or features. The timing of this feature appears strategic, as Apple prepares to launch the iPhone 17 Air later this year. This ultra-thin device—measuring approximately 5.5mm at its thinnest point—will replace the iPhone 16 Plus in Apple's lineup. Due to its slimmer profile, the iPhone 17 Air will have significantly less space for a battery, with some reports suggesting its capacity could be as low as 2,800mAh.
While the AI battery management system was reportedly designed with the iPhone 17 Air in mind, it will be available for all iPhones compatible with iOS 19.
