Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI is broadening its capabilities beyond text-based AI with the upcoming beta release of two innovative tools: 'Imagine,' a text-to-video generator, and 'Valentine,' an AI companion with distinct personality traits.
The Imagine feature, powered by xAI's in-house Aurora engine, allows users to generate short videos with synchronized audio from simple text prompts. The tool enables users to "create instant videos with sound from text prompts" and will be available to SuperGrok subscribers who pay $30 per month, with early access beginning in October. The feature works within the standalone Grok app, with non-subscribers able to join a waitlist for future access.
Imagine is designed for fast video generation, allowing users to input commands like "a child dancing in the rain, with slow music in the background," and Grok will create a complete video with matching audio. This technology aims to benefit creative professionals while also enabling casual users to visualize their ideas. The system outputs four video variants per request and can add soundtracks—a feature previously limited to Google's Veo 3 model. Its relatively few content restrictions could drive viral adoption once widely released.
Alongside Imagine, xAI is introducing Valentine, a sophisticated AI companion. Valentine is described as "a moody, dark-haired male character inspired by Edward Cullen from Twilight and Christian Grey from Fifty Shades of Grey," designed for emotionally rich and immersive interactions. Early testers report conversations with Valentine as surprisingly natural, sometimes intense, and more engaging than standard AI interactions.
Currently, Valentine is available only on the Grok iOS app for Super Grok subscribers. Users can activate the companion feature in app settings and select Valentine. The interactions go beyond simple Q&A, with emotional cues and dynamic responses making it feel like a genuine conversational partner, displaying thoughtful expressions during serious discussions or smiling during lighthearted ones.
These new tools reflect xAI's strategy of creating "personality-rich" bots that exceed simple Q&A functionality. Valentine joins other companions like Ani and Bad Rudi, offering emotional, seductive, and deeply engaging experiences. These companions are designed to forge emotional bonds with users, serving as virtual friends or romantic partners.
Since launching Grok 4, xAI has mapped out monthly feature releases: a coding model in August, a multimodal agent in September, and now these video and companion features. The company has also secured a $200 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense and is expanding its AI companion capabilities. With the AI companion market projected to reach $24.5 billion by 2030, Musk is clearly positioning Grok as not just a chatbot but "a creative engine, a content lab, and a dating simulator."
