Google has officially rolled out a new AI-powered calling feature that allows its search engine to contact local businesses on behalf of users, eliminating the need for people to make phone calls themselves.
The feature, which began testing in January 2025, is now available to all Google Search users in the United States (except in Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana, and Nebraska due to local restrictions). When searching for services like pet groomers, dry cleaners, or auto shops, users will see a new "Have AI check pricing" button beneath business listings.
Powered by a combination of Google's Duplex technology and Gemini AI models, the system handles the entire calling process. After users provide basic details about their needs, the AI makes calls to multiple businesses, announces itself as an automated system from Google, and collects information about pricing and availability. Results are then presented directly in the search interface, allowing users to compare options without picking up the phone.
"Gemini, with Duplex tech, will be able to make calls on your behalf," explained Robby Stein, vice president of product for Google Search. "The calling tool will announce itself as an AI from Google trying to get information on behalf of a customer."
The feature addresses a growing preference among younger users who often dislike making phone calls, while also creating new opportunities for businesses to connect with potential customers. Importantly, businesses maintain control through their Google Business Profile settings, where they can opt out of receiving these automated calls if desired.
This development represents a significant step in Google's broader strategy to integrate agentic AI capabilities into its core products. While the basic calling feature is available to all users, Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers receive higher usage limits and access to additional advanced features like Gemini 2.5 Pro and Deep Search capabilities.
