Meta has officially rolled out its AI-powered video editing capabilities, bringing sophisticated visual effects technology to the masses through its Meta AI ecosystem. The new tool, which draws inspiration from Meta's advanced Movie Gen models, allows users to transform short videos with remarkable ease and creativity.
Launched on June 11, 2025, the feature enables users to edit 10-second video clips using over 50 preset AI prompts. These transformations range from style changes like converting footage into comic book art to more complex modifications such as altering clothing, changing locations, or adding dreamy lighting effects. The technology maintains impressive consistency in motion and visual quality throughout edited clips.
The current implementation is available on the Meta AI app, Meta.AI website, and Meta's CapCut competitor, the Edits app, with plans to integrate it into Instagram "over time," according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri. While users are currently limited to preset options, Meta has announced that custom text prompts for video editing will be introduced later this year.
This release represents the first commercial application of Meta's Movie Gen technology, which has been in development since last year. The full Movie Gen system is even more powerful, capable of generating videos from scratch, turning photos into videos, and creating synchronized audio—features that may eventually make their way to consumer products.
Industry analysts view this technology as potentially transformative for content creation across social media, marketing, and entertainment. By making sophisticated video editing accessible without technical expertise, Meta is effectively lowering the barrier to producing professional-quality visual content. This democratization could significantly impact how brands, creators, and everyday users express themselves through video across Meta's platforms.
As part of Meta's broader AI strategy, this video editing tool follows the company's earlier developments in generative AI, including the Make-A-Scene models in 2022 and Llama Image foundation models, all contributing to Meta's vision of empowering creative expression through accessible AI tools.
