OpenAI plans to unify the breakthroughs across its current lineup and deliver "the best of two worlds" with GPT-5. According to Romain Huet, OpenAI's Head of Developer Experience, "The breakthrough of reasoning in the O-series and the breakthroughs in multi-modality in the GPT-series will be unified, and that will be GPT-5."
Unlike previous iterations that required switching between specialized models, GPT-5 will integrate these capabilities into a single, more powerful system, creating "fewer trade-offs and a more efficient AI experience, whether you're using it for conversation, reasoning, or multimodal tasks."
This consolidation promises a more intuitive experience as users will no longer need to choose between different models for different tasks. GPT-5 will work seamlessly across various applications, delivering consistent performance through one interface.
While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that GPT-5 is expected to launch "sometime in summer" 2025, he noted that the exact timing depends on meeting internal benchmarks and standards. "I don't know exactly when," Altman stated, emphasizing that the model will only be released when it meets OpenAI's performance goals.
OpenAI has high expectations for the new model, previously claiming that "GPT-5 will also make the existing models significantly better at everything." Jerry Tworek, a VP at OpenAI, described it as "our next foundational model that is meant to just make everything our models can currently do better and with less model switching."
The company's direction reflects a convergence of specialized capabilities: "We're converging the specialized reasoning capabilities of the o-series with more of the natural conversational abilities and tool use of the GPT-series.
