OpenAI Doubles Revenue to $10B, Eyes $125B by 2029

OpenAI announced its annualized revenue has reached $10 billion as of June 2025, nearly doubling from $5.5 billion in December 2024. The milestone, achieved less than three years after ChatGPT's launch, puts the company on track to meet its $12.7 billion revenue target for 2025. Despite impressive growth, OpenAI continues to operate at a loss, with profitability not expected until 2029.

OpenAI has hit a significant financial milestone, with its annualized revenue reaching $10 billion as of June 2025, according to company statements. This represents an 82% increase from the $5.5 billion reported in December 2024, demonstrating the rapid commercialization of AI technology.

The revenue figure includes income from ChatGPT subscriptions, business products, and API services, but excludes licensing revenue from Microsoft and large one-time deals. With this growth trajectory, OpenAI appears well-positioned to achieve its previously communicated revenue target of $12.7 billion for 2025.

Despite the impressive revenue growth, OpenAI continues to operate at a substantial loss, having reportedly lost approximately $5 billion in 2024. The company faces significant expenses in talent acquisition, research and development, and computing infrastructure. According to internal projections, OpenAI does not expect to become cash-flow positive until 2029, when it aims to surpass $125 billion in annual revenue.

OpenAI's current valuation of $300 billion, established after raising $40 billion in March 2025, reflects investor confidence in the company's long-term potential. This valuation places OpenAI among the world's most valuable private companies, behind only SpaceX ($350 billion) and on par with ByteDance.

In the competitive AI landscape, OpenAI maintains a substantial lead over rivals. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI executives, recently reached $3 billion in annualized revenue, primarily from enterprise customers using its Claude AI models for coding and other business applications. While impressive, this figure represents less than a third of OpenAI's current revenue run rate.

With over 500 million weekly active users and 3 million paying business customers as of May 2025, OpenAI's growth demonstrates the accelerating adoption of AI technology across consumer and enterprise markets. The company's ambitious revenue projections, including reaching $174 billion by 2030, signal confidence in continued expansion as AI capabilities advance and new applications emerge.
