In a significant development for both journalism and artificial intelligence, Guardian Media Group has formalized a strategic partnership with OpenAI that will bring its award-winning journalism to ChatGPT's global audience.
Under the agreement announced in February 2025, the Guardian's reporting and archived content will be available as a news source within ChatGPT, featuring attributed short summaries and article extracts with clear links back to original articles. This integration ensures that ChatGPT's estimated 300 million weekly users worldwide can access trusted journalism while the Guardian receives proper compensation and attribution for its intellectual property.
Keith Underwood, Chief Financial and Operating Officer at Guardian Media Group, emphasized that the partnership "reflects the intellectual property rights and value associated with our award-winning journalism, expanding our reach and impact to new audiences and innovative platform services."
The collaboration represents a notable shift in the Guardian's approach to AI, as the publisher had previously joined legal action against AI startup Cohere Inc. over unauthorized use of publisher content. The Guardian now joins several major publishers including the Financial Times, Axel Springer, Hearst, and News Corp who have established similar licensing agreements with OpenAI.
Beyond content licensing, the Guardian will implement ChatGPT Enterprise across its operations to develop new products, features, and tools for both readers and business functions. This implementation aligns with the Guardian's AI policy published a year earlier, which emphasized human oversight and using generative AI only for the benefit of readers, business operations, and the organization's wider mission.
Brad Lightcap, Chief Operating Officer at OpenAI, stated that the partnership "furthers our goal of supporting world-class journalism and enriches the ChatGPT experience by providing access to relevant, real-time news content." The collaboration is part of OpenAI's broader strategy to integrate trusted news sources into ChatGPT, improving content reliability while helping publishers and audiences benefit from advanced AI technology.
