Google has taken a major step forward in making its Gemini AI assistant more practical and useful by expanding Gemini Live's app integration capabilities across its ecosystem.
First announced at Google I/O 2025 in May and beginning its rollout in late June, Gemini Live now allows users to interact with several Google apps during conversations. The integration currently supports Google Maps, Calendar, Tasks, and Keep, with Google promising more connections to come.
The new functionality transforms Gemini Live from a general conversational AI into an action-oriented assistant. Users can now accomplish real-world tasks through natural conversation. For example, when planning an evening out with friends, users can discuss details with Gemini Live, which will instantly create an event in Google Calendar. Similarly, when looking for restaurant recommendations, Gemini can pull up the latest information directly from Google Maps.
What makes these integrations particularly powerful is their multimodal nature. Beyond voice commands, users can leverage Gemini Live's camera and screen sharing capabilities—which were made available to all Android and iOS users in May—to accomplish tasks. For instance, users can point their camera at a poster with event details or a paper shopping list, and Gemini will create calendar events or add items to Keep notes accordingly.
When these app integrations are invoked during a conversation, a chip with the relevant app icon appears at the bottom of the screen, providing visual feedback such as "Note created" along with an undo option. This design ensures users maintain awareness and control over Gemini's actions.
The rollout is part of Google's broader strategy to position Gemini as "the most personal, proactive and powerful AI assistant on the planet," according to Dr. Megan Jones Bell, who detailed these updates in a July 7 blog post. The company is clearly aiming to make Gemini more deeply integrated into users' daily digital lives.
For users wanting to try these new capabilities, they can simply ask Gemini Live something like "Can you add things to my Google Keep shopping list?" However, as with most Google rollouts, the feature is being deployed gradually, so some users may need to wait a bit longer to access all functionalities.
These app integrations complement other recent Gemini updates, including the introduction of Imagen 4 for improved image generation, Veo 3 for video creation with native audio support, and enhanced Deep Research capabilities that can now incorporate users' private documents alongside public information.
