Google's Android XR Brings Gemini AI to Smart Glasses

Google has revealed its vision for the future of wearable AI technology with Android XR, a new operating system specifically built for the Gemini era that will power both headsets and smart glasses.

Unveiled during Google I/O 2025, Android XR smart glasses represent a significant advancement in Google's decade-long pursuit of functional eyewear technology. Equipped with cameras, microphones, and speakers, these glasses work seamlessly with smartphones, allowing users to access apps without reaching for their phones. An optional in-lens display privately provides contextual information directly in the wearer's field of vision.

The integration of Gemini AI is the platform's defining feature. The glasses can see and hear what users do, enabling Gemini to understand context, remember important information, and provide timely assistance. During demonstrations, Google showcased real-world applications including messaging friends, making appointments, getting turn-by-turn directions, taking photos, and even real-time language translation between people speaking different languages.

"What if your AI assistant could see the world from your perspective and offer hands-free help? That's the vision driving our latest advancements in Android XR," explained Shahram Izadi, Vice President and General Manager at Android XR. "With Gemini on these devices, you can have an assistant that's right there with you, sharing your vantage point, ready to help whenever you start the conversation."

Recognizing that smart glasses need to be stylish for all-day wear, Google has partnered with eyewear brands including Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, with plans to add more partners like Kering Eyewear in the future. Google has also extended its partnership with Samsung beyond headsets to include glasses development.

While no specific release date or pricing has been announced, Google confirmed that developers will be able to start building for the platform later this year. The company has already begun gathering feedback from trusted testers to ensure the product respects privacy for both users and those around them.
