Meta Platforms has officially expanded its AI wearables lineup beyond Ray-Ban with the announcement of Oakley Meta HSTN smart glasses, targeting athletes and active users in a growing competitive market.
The new Oakley Meta HSTN glasses, pronounced "HOW-stuhn," combine Oakley's signature athletic design with Meta's AI technology. They feature significant technical upgrades over the previous Ray-Ban Meta models, including an ultra-wide 12MP camera capable of recording 3K video (2,880 by 1,620 pixels), doubling the resolution of Ray-Ban's 1080p offering.
Battery life has also been substantially improved, with the Oakley Meta HSTN lasting up to eight hours of typical use compared to Ray-Ban Meta's four hours. The included charging case provides up to 48 hours of additional power, and the glasses can reach 50% charge in just 20 minutes. With an IPX4 water resistance rating, the glasses can withstand splashes, sweat, and light rain, making them suitable for various outdoor activities.
The glasses maintain core features from previous Meta wearables, including open-ear speakers, five microphones for voice commands, and integration with Meta AI for hands-free operation. Some models will incorporate Oakley's PRIZM lens technology, which enhances contrast and visibility in various lighting conditions.
Meta's expansion into performance-focused eyewear comes amid growing competition in the AI wearables market. Alphabet recently announced a $150 million partnership with Warby Parker to develop glasses with Google's Gemini AI assistant, while Snap plans to release its sixth-generation AR glasses in 2026. Meta's partnership with EssilorLuxottica (owner of both Ray-Ban and Oakley) has already proven successful, with Ray-Ban Meta glasses reportedly selling millions of units.
The Oakley Meta HSTN will be available in six frame and lens combinations, with prices starting at $399. A limited-edition version featuring gold accents and 24K PRIZM polarized lenses will be available for pre-order on July 11 at $499, with the standard collection launching later this summer. Meta has confirmed plans to release the glasses in 15 countries initially, with more markets to follow.
