GPT Image 2 pricing and supported sizes

Four of the eleven aspect ratios never reach 4K

GPT Image 2 on Doitong costs 300 credits at 1K, 500 at 2K and 800 at 4K. What the price alone does not tell you: 4K is not reachable at every aspect ratio. A 1:1 square tops out at 2K, and auto, 5:4 and 4:5 top out at 1K. A request above the ceiling is quietly downscaled rather than rejected — and priced at the tier that was actually delivered. Below is every ceiling, plus what each tier costs in dollars.

How to price a GPT Image 2 job

1

Send an explicit aspect ratio

Eleven values are recognised: auto, 1:1, 5:4, 9:16, 21:9, 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 4:5, 3:4, 2:3. Anything else is normalised to auto.

2

Read the ceiling for that ratio

Seven ratios run the full ladder to 4K. 1:1 stops at 2K. auto, 5:4 and 4:5 stop at 1K.

3

Convert the tier you will actually get to dollars

300, 500 or 800 credits — $0.201/$0.120/$0.099, $0.335/$0.200/$0.165 or $0.536/$0.320/$0.264 depending on the pack.

Sizes here are a tier (1K, 2K, 4K) combined with an aspect ratio, not a free pixel value. Which tier you can reach depends on the ratio.

Price, ceilings and what happens when you exceed them

What one GPT Image 2 image costs

GPT Image 2 is billed in credits at three fixed points: 300 credits for 1K, 500 for 2K and 800 for 4K. The step from 1K to 2K is 200 credits more; the step from 2K to 4K is 300 credits more. A 4K render costs 500 credits more than a 1K render. Credits come from packs — 30,000 for $19.99, 100,000 for $39.99 and 300,000 for $99.99, which is $0.67, $0.40 and $0.33 per 1,000 credits. A single image therefore costs $0.201, $0.120 or $0.099 at 1K; $0.335, $0.200 or $0.165 at 2K; and $0.536, $0.320 or $0.264 at 4K. Credits are the only unit involved: 300, 500 or 800 per image at the tier you receive.

Which aspect ratios can reach 4K, and which cannot

GPT Image 2 recognises eleven aspect ratio values: auto, 1:1, 5:4, 9:16, 21:9, 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 4:5, 3:4 and 2:3. They do not share the same resolution ladder. Seven run the full ladder to 4K: 9:16, 21:9, 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 3:4 and 2:3 — the only ratios where the 800-credit tier is reachable at all. 1:1 stops at 2K, at 500 credits. auto, 5:4 and 4:5 stop one rung lower, at 1K and 300 credits. auto is also the fallback: any aspect ratio value outside the recognised eleven is normalised to auto and inherits the 1K ceiling, so an unrecognised string does not fail loudly, it just produces the smallest tier.

Requests above the ceiling are downscaled, not rejected

Asking for 4K at 1:1 does not return an error. The request is clamped to the highest tier that ratio allows — 2K — and generation proceeds normally. The same happens at 5:4, 4:5 and auto: a 4K or 2K request comes back as 1K. Nothing in the result announces the downgrade. A 4K request is silently reduced at four of the eleven recognised values, plus at every unrecognised value that falls through to auto. If you are building automation on top of GPT Image 2, or handing files to a pipeline with a hard minimum size, read the dimensions of the returned file rather than trusting the parameter you sent. Treat the requested resolution as an upper bound, not a guarantee.

Billing follows the tier you actually receive

The clamp applies to the price as well as to the pixels. Cost is computed from the same normalised aspect ratio that determines what gets delivered, so the tier you are charged for cannot exceed the tier you get. Ask for 4K at 1:1 and you receive 2K and pay 500 credits, not 800. Ask for 4K with an aspect ratio value that is not recognised, and you receive 1K and pay 300. The failure mode of silent downscaling is a smaller image than you expected, never a larger bill than the image justifies.

How to actually get 4K out of GPT Image 2

Three rules follow from the ceiling table. Do not shoot square if you need 4K: use 16:9, 3:2 or 4:3 for landscape, 9:16, 3:4 or 2:3 for vertical, 21:9 for ultra-wide — all seven reach the 800-credit tier. Avoid the near-square ratios: 5:4 and 4:5 look like safe compromises but are the most restricted values in the set, 1K only, so use 4:3 or 3:4 for a near-square frame above 1K. And always send an explicit aspect ratio, because auto caps you at 1K regardless of the resolution you ask for, and a mistyped ratio lands on auto too.

GPT Image 2 next to the other image models on Doitong

In credits per image: Seedream 5 Lite is 100 credits with the resolution setting ignored; Seedream 5 Pro is 338 at 1K and 675 at 2K; Nano Banana Pro charges 750 credits whether you ask for 1K, 2K or 4K; GPT Image 2 is 300, 500 and 800. At the top tier that puts Nano Banana Pro at 750 credits — $0.503, $0.300 or $0.247 per image — against GPT Image 2 at 800 credits, or $0.536, $0.320 or $0.264. At the bottom tier nothing is close to Seedream 5 Lite at 100 credits, though on Lite you take its fixed per-ratio size and no choice about it.

GPT Image 2 pricing — questions with numbers in the answer

Can GPT Image 2 generate a 4K square image?

No. On Doitong the 1:1 aspect ratio is capped at 2K. A 4K request at 1:1 is clamped down to 2K and billed at the 2K price of 500 credits. Seven ratios do reach 4K — 9:16, 21:9, 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 3:4 and 2:3 — so if you need 4K pixels in a square deliverable, generate at one of those and crop toward square afterwards.

How much does one GPT Image 2 image cost?

On Doitong, GPT Image 2 costs 300 credits at 1K, 500 credits at 2K and 800 credits at 4K. Converted to money through the credit packs — 30,000 for $19.99, 100,000 for $39.99, 300,000 for $99.99 — a 1K image costs $0.201, $0.120 or $0.099; a 2K image $0.335, $0.200 or $0.165; a 4K image $0.536, $0.320 or $0.264.

Which GPT Image 2 aspect ratios support 4K?

Seven of the eleven recognised values: 9:16, 21:9, 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 3:4 and 2:3. Those run the complete 1K / 2K / 4K ladder on Doitong. 1:1 stops at 2K. auto, 5:4 and 4:5 stop at 1K. Any aspect ratio value outside the recognised set is normalised to auto, which means it is also limited to 1K.

What happens if I request a resolution above the ceiling for my aspect ratio?

The request is downscaled rather than rejected. Asking for 4K at 1:1 returns a 2K image; asking for 4K or 2K at 5:4, 4:5 or auto returns 1K. Generation proceeds normally and nothing in the result flags the change, so verify the dimensions of the returned file if your pipeline depends on a minimum output size.

Will I be charged the 4K price if I only receive a 2K image?

No. Price is computed from the same normalised aspect ratio that decides what gets delivered, so the tier you are billed for can never be higher than the tier you received. A 4K request at 1:1 delivers 2K and costs 500 credits, not 800. A 4K request that falls back to auto delivers 1K and costs 300 credits.

Does the auto aspect ratio work at 2K or 4K?

No. auto is capped at 1K, 300 credits, no matter what resolution you request. It is also the fallback for unrecognised aspect ratio values, so a typo silently lands you on the lowest tier. If you want anything above 1K on Doitong, send an explicit ratio: 1:1 for 2K, or one of 9:16, 21:9, 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 3:4 and 2:3 for 4K.

Is GPT Image 2 cheaper than Nano Banana Pro or Seedream 5?

It depends on the tier. On Doitong, Nano Banana Pro charges a flat 750 credits at 1K, 2K and 4K, so it undercuts GPT Image 2 at 4K (800) but costs far more at 1K (300). Seedream 5 Lite is 100 credits with the resolution setting ignored. Seedream 5 Pro is 338 credits at 1K and 675 at 2K. GPT Image 2 sits in the middle: 300, 500 and 800.
